ORC - Week 5: Prep for Primer

Week 5 of the One Room Challenge was a very busy week for me both personally and at work. I had a goal of what I wanted to accomplish this week and I didn’t quite make it there, but I did get quite a bit done! Baby steps = progress, right? Even though this project is going the speed of a turtle, it feels good because I’ve been able to do little bits here and there and I can see it coming together!

The first thing we were able to check off the list was taking down the old light above the sink. It was a fluorescent tube light and it hummed all the time. Talk about annoying! I have a beautiful flush mount picked out in my head, now I just need to find it!

Upon taking it down, we didn’t take the bulb out first. So as soon as the first screw was loose, the entire blub shattered in the sink. It was great!

TAKING OFF THE DOORS

Next up was to unscrew the doors off of the hinges. Being a mom with young kids, this was the part I have been dreading. Everything is now exposed for my toddler to get into! Let’s use this as motivation to light a fire under my butt and get these cabinets primed and painted ASAP!!

PREP FOR PRIMER

Now that the doors and drawers are out it’s time to prep the boxes. First I used Krud Kutter to wipe down all of the boxes. I love this stuff - it really gets the “krud” off of the cabinets.

Next, I took fine-grit sandpaper and sanded anywhere where the wood was worn or splintered.

Lastly, I used the plastic wood filler to fill any gashes or dents that needed tending to.

I’m using Zinsser’s Bulls Eye 123 primer for the cabinets and you do not have to de-gloss before using it. I have not personally used this yet but I have read lots about it, watched other bloggers use it, and my DIY friend loves it! So I am going to trust it and give it a go!!

THE CURRENT VIEW

Honestly, the current view looks like a mess. But, when I look at this project in terms of steps, we are almost there! So much prep work has been done to get to where we are now and once the paint hits the cabinets it’s going to look so much better so fast!!

The next step is primer! Looking at my week ahead I have a decent amount of margin so maybe I’ll get more done than I think I will! Follow along in IG stories to watch the project unfold!
